Our History

Photo of David Constable, founder and owner of Constables Mobility

In 1979 David Constable, founder and owner of Constables Mobility was approached to convert a van to take a wheelchair. From this request he decided to consider an engineering solution of making a wheelchair that could become the driver's seat of a standard car. In 1981 the world famous Car Chair was born. This design innovation provided wheelchair users with upfront travel within a standard production motor vehicle. During the mid 1980s the company, which was then known as Carchair, added rear entry wheelchair accessible conversions to its product portfolio to offer wheelchair users a choice of upfront or rear travel.

In 1987 Constables Mobility along with Gowrings were the first two conversion companies to be included onto the Motability Operations Scheme. With a history of expert engineering and excellence Constables Mobility now design Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles ideally suited to the needs of mobility customers and their requirements.
