Service
At Constables Mobility we pride ourselves on the quality of
our service, from assessment through to delivery. By placing
the emphasis on getting these elements right, we aim to
ensure that you get many years of reliable and enjoyable
usage from your wheelchair accessible conversion. As a
company, we do not compromise our high quality standards and
so our workshop staff are fully trained and have completed an
apprenticeship in their relevant trade. At the same time we
source the very best materials so that our mobility products
are able to withstand the heavy wear and tear demanded of a
wheelchair accessible conversion. As our work is carried out
in-house we are able to control quality and time-scale more
accurately.
Emphasis on safety: As we put a lot of emphasis on
safety, we build extra strength into the floor pan, when
lowering the floor of our rear access conversions. Our
mobility conversions undergo extensive independent testing to
ensure that our rear seats, wheelchair and rear passenger
anchorage points perform as effectively as the original
manufacturer's equipment.
Built with wheelchair users in mind: Each vehicle is
designed with the user in mind, so at Constables Mobility we
always provide easy access and all round vision, along with
high specification build quality to maximize product
durability and to attain the highest possible safety
standards. We believe that these factors, along with a choice
of whether to travel in the front or at the rear, give our
customers excellent value for money. To ensure that our
mobility vehicle conversions are the best available, we have
our own modern factory facilities and a spacious showroom
where wheelchair users and their carers are able to view our
products in comfort.
Accreditations
Constables Mobility's wheelchair vehicles are built to the
highest quality standards. Commitment to innovation doesn't
mean that quality is sacrificed, but instead the company
works to the most exacting standards to maintain the highest
product specification.
Constables Mobility has obtained the internationally
recognised quality standard, ISO 9001:2000 covering both
product design and manufacture. This standard clearly
demonstrates that the company operates a quality system,
which is independently monitored by the Vehicle Certificate
Agency.
Constables Mobility has gained the Premier Partner
accreditation from Motability Operations and is authorized to
manufacture and supply wheelchair accessible vehicles under
the Motability scheme.
Constables Mobility also has Low Volume Type Approval with
the Vehicle Certification Agency on its best selling models,
which includes the Openroad Kangoo and Openroad Expert. This
accreditation makes this specialist supplier a vehicle
manufacturer in its own right. Both the Openroad Kangoo and
the Openroad Expert conversions have undergone strict testing
procedures by an independent specialist to ensure they comply
with the required quality standards. In its continuous aim to
provide wheelchair users with the very best wheelchair
accessible conversions, Constables Mobility invited vehicle
manufacturer Renault to inspect its Openroad Kangoo. This
indepth inspection took the form of studying build manuals
and procedures and checking third party accreditations. The
team of Renault specialists visited the factory to test the
vehicles. This extensive exercise finally resulted in the
Openroad Kangoo being awarded the Renault quality and
technical conversion certificate known as 'Renault Accord
Produit'.
History
David Constable, founder and owner of Constables Mobility,
has been converting vehicles for wheelchair users since the
early 1980s when he and a colleague developed the world
famous Carchair system. This design innovation provided
wheelchair users with upfront travel within a standard
production motor vehicle. During the mid 1980s the company,
which was then known as Carchair, added rear entry wheelchair
accessible conversions to its product portfolio to offer
wheelchair users a choice of upfront or rear travel.
Information
Constables Mobility has recognised that acquiring a
wheelchair accessible vehicle is a very individual event -
after all it's not every day that you change or renew your
car. Selecting a vehicle should be a pleasant, stress free
experience. Ticking as many, if not all, the boxes on your
wish list is essential when making your selection - safe,
comfortable, functional, versatile, easy to park, good
visibility, spacious, MPV, metallic paint, air conditioning -
whatever the order of importance for you, we are here to
help. Having a firm understanding of the necessary needs of
the wheelchair user(s) and other potential occupants of the
vehicle are paramount as well as criteria that enable all
concerned to make an educated decision whilst still having
freedom to choose. We aim to provide you with as much
information as possible to help you make the right choice for
a vehicle that fits in with your lifestyle or business
requirements.
Things to consider
When you are able-bodied, buying a new vehicle is extremely
easy as the variety of choice on the market seems almost
endless. With car showrooms on, what seems like, every corner
of the high street the buyer is spoilt for choice. All they
have to do is decide how much they want to pay for their car,
the type of vehicle and specification they are looking for
and then go hunting for the best deal. When you are in a
wheelchair the whole process of buying a new car is much more
difficult. For a start, the buyer is limited by the number of
vehicles that are suitable for a wheelchair accessible
conversion and also, their disability can have an effect on
their vehicle choice. One of the major advantages of choosing
a new wheelchair accessible vehicle is that you will not have
to pay the VAT element on the cost of the vehicle, or on the
cost of the conversion. And, in the future when you take your
vehicle in to be serviced or to be repaired, the charge will
be VAT free. If you register a car first, and then undertake
the conversion work afterwards, then this dispensation does
not apply. There are many different types of adapted vehicles
each of which are designed to offer wheelchair users a
convenient and efficient mobility solution. The most popular
are rear access conversions which are designed so that the
wheelchair user enters the vehicle via a rear located ramp or
lift system. Other types of conversions are designed so that
the user can drive from their wheelchair or to transfer into
the driver's seat from within the vehicle.
Approved converters
Vehicle conversion for wheelchair use is a specialist job, as
the aim is to make the vehicle as safe and comfortable as
possible for the user. A reputable manufacturer will provide
you with an all-inclusive cost for converting the vehicle
and, where required, installing the driver's adaptations and
any other devices that are required by the disabled person or
their carer. To ensure that you buy a quality wheelchair
vehicle you need to buy from a specialist converter that is
Motability approved and is accredited with the Vehicle
Certification Agency with Low Volume Type Approval (LVTA).
Also, an ISO 9001:2000 quality accreditation will also
provide added peace of mind, as it shows that the vehicle is
built to the required high standards so that safety is not
compromised. The benefits of having Low Volume Type Approval
will show that the vehicle has undergone a 'pull test' on the
seat mounts and has a production procedure in place that
conforms to all necessary standards. Not all vehicles
manufactured by the converter will have this accreditation
due to the low numbers produced of a particular model, but it
is likely that the other vehicles in their range will be
built to the same high standards.
Your needs
Over recent years consumers have become far more demanding
and expect a lot more in their vehicles as standard items,
such as a CD player and air conditioning, etc. etc,
consequently modern vehicles now offer high levels of comfort
to all occupants. For wheelchair users comfort has other
dimensions such as is there enough room for you and your
wheelchair? Do the windows give you a good view of the
surroundings? Is the heating system effective enough to keep
you warm in the winter and is there adequate ventilation to
keep you cool on hot sunny days when travelling at the rear
of the vehicle? It is therefore important to take into
account the wheelchair vehicle's versatility. For example, if
you will need to carry a lot of luggage and disability aids,
you will need to ensure that there is enough interior space
to accommodate both you in your wheelchair and the other
items in the vehicle. Also, how many people will you need to
carry with you in the vehicle at any one time? After all,
there is no point buying a vehicle that can only accommodate
3 people other than the wheelchair user, if you are a family
of five. Consequently for larger groups a people carrier is
likely to be a more appropriate mobility vehicle.
Using your motability allowance: You can use your
Motability allowance towards the cost of your new or used
wheelchair vehicle or you can choose a contract hire option
which may be more affordable. For more information on
Mobility allowances visit: www.direct.gov.uk
What to expect
Everyone of our customers is a unique individual. That's why
we offer a personal service to make sure every aspect of
choosing, purchasing and owning your vehicle is as simple and
trouble-free as possible. We'd be delighted to meet you in

familiarity of your own surroundings. You can make sure that
access is easy, try the vehicle in your own driveway or
garage and check that there's room for any special mobility
aids you might need. We'll also make sure that the vehicle
you are considering is the right one for your circumstances
and we'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Once you've made a choice, we'll give you a detailed
quotation and an indication of delivery. When your vehicle is
ready, it goes through a complete quality check and is then
thoroughly valeted before it leaves the factory. We deliver
it to you and give you a complete demonstration to make sure
that you are familiar and confident with all the operations.
But, don't worry if you're unsure about anything. Help and
advice are just a phonecall away. You can call us anytime
with any queries or problems and we've got a nationwide
network of approved, qualified agents near you to carry out
any work that needs to be done.
Comfort and safety
Is there enough room for you and your wheelchair? You don't
want to feel cramped. Do the windows give you a good view of
the surroundings without straining? Does the heating system
keep you warm enough in winter? On hot summer days, can you
get adequate ventilation? That's particularly important if
you are travelling in the back of the vehicle. Rear access
vehicles require a strong, non-slip ramp that is not steep.
Users who prefer to travel in the front need a safe, simple
form of access that moves them gently and easily from the
road to the vehicle. Once the wheelchair is in the vehicle,
it needs to be securely restrained so that it does not move
during the journey. The chair should also be secured so that
it is protected in the unfortunate event of an accident. Will
you be carrying a lot of luggage, as well as a wheelchair?
That determines the type of vehicle you choose. You may wish
to keep the boot or the back of the vehicle free for luggage
by choosing a front-seat system. How many other people might
want to travel in the vehicle as well as the driver and the
wheelchair passenger. A people carrier might be more
appropriate if you are anticipating larger groups. Conversion
is a specialist job and the aim is to make the vehicle as
safe and comfortable as possible for the wheelchair user. A
reputable manufacturer should quote you an all-inclusive
price for fitting. You can convert both new and used vehicles
for wheelchair use. You can use your Motability allowance
towards the cost of your next vehicle.
